I lost a very dear, loyal and loving friend. We closed every telephone conversation with "I love you", and Wendy's opening remark was always "How are you, hon?" My "teddy bear" creations began with identical sets of "Wendy and Cheryl' as striking CUPE bears; each set wore the actual ragged clothing from baseball caps, sunglasses, long underwear, domed jackets and scarves, and CUPE pins we donned during our 110 day long strike in -45 degree weather in New Liskeard some 17 years ago. I know those teddy bears brought Wendy comfort and were displayed on her dresser; I admit I have trouble looking at my set right now, but I know they will give me tremendous comfort in time.
I treasure every moment of our 22 year friendship which began in mid-life when we met through employment. Although we had not seen each other for several years due to geographical distance across Ontario, our deep friendship endured. I am grateful that I kept her last Christmas 2018 and birthday cards sent to me; she laughed because the beautiful pink and silver sparkly Christmas card bearing the words "Your Friendship is Such a Gift" matched my pink cammo sewing room, and her lovely peach and yellow "Happy Birthday" card matched my laundry room decorating scheme...Wendy said I was the only person she knew that kept cards for both sentimental and decorating reasons! Ironically, the last 2019 birthday card posed the question in her handwriting "To Cheryl my long standing friend - When will I see you again?...that is the question." I have other beautiful cards from Wendy that I had matted and framed; they are wonderful keepsakes. I am grateful as well that I have the most beautiful picture taken of the two of us about 8 years ago when we met with my Mom and a bunch of my friends...it was as if we had all known each other for years, and everyone loved Wendy. My love to Garry and Wendy's family...there is purpose in this heart wrenching sadness. I know that Wendy loved Natalie and Brad and granddaughter Hannah very much, and her union with Garry brought her great happiness. With all my love Cheryl
